The economic argument works up to a point- that being, when you’re dealing with someone who just wants to hurt others out of principle.A lot of “liberal” social policies - drugs, healthcare, housing, education, unemployment benefits, justice/incarceration, etc are provably more cost-effective in the long and even medium term, but are shat on by a lot of the people who don’t stand to benefit from the alternatives (as opposed to those who support destructive policies for profit, e.g. private prison providers) because of ideological, sociopathic hate that goes well beyond ignorance of cause and effect.
